Shaputuan: a wise choice for outdoor enthusiasts

Traditionally, the shaputuan was erected during seasonal gatherings , particularly during hunting seasons, trade, and family reunions . Its structure, made of wooden poles covered with hides or canvas, was designed to withstand the northern climate while being demountable and transportable .

More than just a shelter, the shaputuan represented a collective living space : people gathered there to share meals, tell stories, pass on knowledge, and make important decisions. It embodied the community spirit and solidarity of the Innu people.

Why do we use shaputuan today?

Nowadays, shaputuan retains great symbolic and cultural value . It is used, in particular, for:

  • Community gatherings: ceremonies, cultural events, group discussions;

  • The transmission of traditions: teaching of the language, ancestral knowledge and cultural practices;

  • Educational and intercultural events: in schools, festivals or awareness-raising activities;

  • Spaces for dialogue and healing: as a safe place that promotes listening and respect.

In our modern era, the shaputuan has become a living symbol of cultural resilience . It allows us to maintain a strong connection to our roots while adapting to contemporary realities. Its presence is a reminder of the importance of gathering , respecting the land , and sharing – values that remain relevant today.

Thus, the shaputuan is not just a traditional tent, it is a space that carries identity, memory and future.

A premium canvas, designed to last

At Habitation Wigwam, we have chosen a premium polycotton canvas, composed of 60% polyester and 40% cotton , with a weight of 13 oz . This specialized fabric costs between 30 and 50% more than the 10 oz. 100% cotton canvas typically found on the market.

Why this choice? Because it offers many advantages:

  • More resistant to wear;

  • Lighter for transport;

  • Dries quickly after rain or humidity;

  • Less susceptible to fungi and mold.

Designed for the most extreme Canadian conditions

Our tents are designed to withstand Canada's harsh weather conditions . Whether for a deep-forest hunting expedition or a high-end off-grid glamping setup, you can count on the robustness and reliability of our tents.

A wise choice for outdoor enthusiasts

Unlike less expensive alternatives, our 13 oz polycotton canvas ensures:

  • Exceptional durability;

  • Excellent insulation;

  • Increased resistance to humidity.

We don't just sell tents: we offer true shelters designed to accompany adventurers, campers, and explorers in their most ambitious projects.

Designed for the outdoors: Superior canvas and construction

The choice of canvas material determines the longevity of your prospector tent. That's why we use a 13 oz polycotton blend (60% polyester, 40% cotton) instead of the 10 oz 100% cotton used by many competitors.

  • More durable: Lasts twice as long as 10 oz 100% cotton canvas

  • Quick drying: Reduces moisture build-up and the risk of mold and mildew

  • Lightweight and sturdy: Easier to carry while remaining strong

  • Fire and Rot Resistant: Treated to be waterproof, mildew proof and flame retardant
